Black out a PDF - and really remove it

Updated July 1, 2026 - PDF privacy guide

Short answer: To redact a PDF privately, open it in Safemii, black out the words or areas you want gone, and save a clean copy. Safemii removes the covered text from the saved file instead of only drawing a black box on top. It can also strip hidden PDF details such as author name, app name, comments, and other file data. The file is processed on your phone and is not uploaded.

This matters for bank statements, payslips, leases, school forms, medical letters, IDs, and any PDF you plan to send to a person or upload to an AI tool. A PDF can look clean while still carrying the private text underneath.

How to redact a PDF on your phone

  1. Open Safemii and choose the PDF.
  2. Review the private details Safemii finds, or draw over the parts you already know you want gone.
  3. Save a clean copy.
  4. Open the clean copy and check that the hidden text is no longer searchable or selectable.

Why a black box is not enough

Some PDF editors only place a black rectangle over text. That can be dangerous because the real text may still sit inside the file. Someone may be able to copy it, search it, or remove the rectangle later. Safemii's goal is the safer version: remove the text from the saved file and then draw the cover-up.

Redaction standard, in plain language

Safemii does not claim NIST certification, but its redaction language follows the same practical idea found in public sanitization guidance: the private content should not remain practically accessible in the copy you share. NIST SP 800-88 describes sanitization around making access to target data infeasible for a given level of effort. For a consumer PDF workflow, that means the clean copy should remove the covered text or pixels where supported, not just hide them from view.

What Safemii can clean from a PDF

Scanned PDFs and limits

A scanned PDF is often just a picture of a page. In that case, the safe cleanup is pixel-based: black out the visible area in the image. A text-based PDF can also contain selectable words behind the page. Safemii handles the safe path for the PDF type it sees, but you should still review the saved copy before sharing important documents.

Best for

Documents you send

Bank statements, payslips, leases, IDs, school forms, medical letters, and screenshots saved as PDFs.

Documents you upload to AI

Clean the private details first, then upload only the safe copy to an AI tool if you still choose to use one.

Find every place a word appears

If a name, account number, or case number appears many times, Safemii Pro is planned to support find-and-redact across the PDF. See pricing for the planned free and Pro split.

Common questions

Can someone recover text under a black box?

They can if the tool only placed a shape on top. That is why real redaction matters: the saved copy should remove the covered text or pixels, not just hide them visually.

Does PDF metadata matter?

Yes. A PDF can include author names, titles, comments, forms, attachments, and app details that are not obvious when you look at the page.

Should I redact before uploading a PDF to AI?

Yes. Remove names, numbers, signatures, and hidden file details first. Upload only the clean copy if you still need to use AI.
